You are kindly invited to join us for the A4L Book Club which will discuss the following book: Suleika Jaouad: Between two kingdoms.

A powerful and deeply personal memoir chronicling the author’s experience with leukemia, prolonged treatment, and the complex transition between illness and survivorship. The book offers a profound insight into the lived experience of a patient and raises important questions about identity, uncertainty, hope, communication, and the role of the healthcare system.

As researchers, we often operate in a world of data, protocols, and measurable outcomes. This book provides an opportunity to pause and engage with the personal narrative behind the diagnoses we study, and to reflect on questions such as:

  • How do patients experience the research and clinical systems we contribute to?
  • What does it mean to live “between two kingdoms” — between sickness and health?
  • How can we more consciously align our work with the lived realities of the people it ultimately serves?

No prior reading is required — openness to reflection and dialogue is what matters most. To help you engage in the discussion, you may wish to watch the following video in advance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5HQamrXlSY

Organized by the VRC Department of Medical Humanities and History of Medicine in collaboration with Znanstveno društvo za zgodovino zdravstvene kulture Slovenije - Scientific Society for the History of Health Culture of Slovenia (ZDZZKS).
