The virtual Department of Membrane Biochemistry is committed to advancing the understanding of the inner life of membranes. Our focus primarily lies in the neuronal membrane, however the Department is deeply interested in the interplay between specific proteins and membrane lipids in other cellular membranes as well as organelle membranes.
The researchers of this Department are therefore studying lipidomics as well as proteomics, using state-of-the-art approaches in both fields to examine lipid-protein interactions as a nexus contributing to a healthy cellular environment. In that sense we are seeking multidisciplinary approaches combining tools such as CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, electrophysiology, enzyme activity assays, metabolomics analyses with advanced pan-omics or integrative analysis of multi-omics data.
The ultimate goal is to contribute to the understanding of complex membrane dynamics in order to elucidate the neurobiological basis of complex brain disorders’ ethiopathogenesis, as well as other membrane-linked disorders. The Department will foster collaborations, reagents and experience exchanges, as well as joint applications for competitive funding.
